My ICE Plan "In Case of Emergency"
Home Inventory & Family Emergency Planning Software

Creating a detailed list

Begin in one room, like the family room. (note: using the "tree view" of My ICE Plan. is good choice when adding many items in one room at one time because the room field is automatically entered for you when you insert a new item from that view.)

Tip: Using your digital camera you probably can capture most items in one room with a single shot or just a few shots or video clips. Then use that same image/video clips for all items in that room. Example: You take a picture of the family room. In it is the TV, the stereo, sofas and nik naks. Using the same picture for the TV record, then again for the sofas and again for the nik naks. This way it saves you time and disk space by taking less pictures. Remember you can change this at anytime if you should desire to have a single image for each item.

If items have a brand name, make, model, serial numbers and you know the price that you paid and where, then enter that data in the appropriate fields. Enter in the description field a description and any other information you think might be helpful in filing a claim or police report. Be honest about the cost of items. A question about one item could lead to questioning the value of all items. Make sure to cover all items before moving on to the next room.

Go to the next room and repeat the process.

  • Remember to look in closets, drawers and boxes.
  • Record items in sheds, garages, basements, porches, attics, hallways and around outdoor areas like pools and decks.
  • Don't forget to list seasonal items you may have stored away: pool items, snowblower, skis, tennis racquets, skates, surf boards, bikes, lawn furniture, barbecue, lawn mower, etc.
  • To save time you can group like-items together by category, quantity and cost. For instance, “10 pairs of shoes” or “100 books” and estimate the total cost.

Remember to also take note and make copies of important personal documents and records and record where these paper records are kept in the item description field.
